2017 Cancer Care Day Results

Miller Plant Farm, York, PA was host to the 1st Annual Cancer Care Day at Miller Plant Farm on Saturday, August 5, 2017. The event was made possible by generous donations from local community members and businesses, countless volunteers, friends, and family. All proceeds raised throughout the entire day will benefit WellSpan’s York Cancer Care Center at Apple Hill Medical Center in York.

The festivities began with the 1st Annual Farm Fresh 5K. Dustyn Miller, 5th Generation Farmer at Miller Plant Farm, provided pre-race announcements and gave some family back story as to the charity of choice. He was quoted saying, “Being a local business, Miller Plant Farm is very excited to be able to host this very special event today in support of one of our own so much.”

167 Participants completed the rugged, all-terrain course which consisted of gravel surfaces, farm trails, and wooded paths. The course provided participants with scenic views of the Leader Heights region along with West York in the far distance. The event became more of a mud run than intended due to the more than 11” of rain that fell within the 3 weeks leading up to the race; 2.5” of that rain fell within 9 hours of the 9AM shotgun start.

David Rizzuto of York had a winning time of 21:51. Second place went to Derek Harlacher of York with a time of 22:56 and Jacob Franklin, also of York, came in third with a time of 23:18. Miller Plant Farm employee, Lindee Anders of York lead the females with a finishing time of 24:00, and came in 6th overall place. Overall male and overall female winners received a $50 gift card to Miller Plant Farm. For a complete list of results, see below.

All participants enjoyed fresh cut watermelon and cantaloupe, hailing from the host Farm, once they crossed the finish line. 5K Participants were entered into a drawing for a 2017 Fall Small CSA Share to the CSA Program at Miller Plant Farm; the winner of that drawing was Todd Why of York.

Following the Farm Fresh 5K, there were various food concessions including pit beef sandwiches prepared by the Sons of the American Legion Glen Rock Post #403. Families had the opportunity to take free wagon rides through the fields of Miller Plant Farm. Children enjoyed a bounce house provided by Grand Rental Station True Value of York, and also an inflatable obstacle course donated by True Value of Shrewsbury. Local artisan, Janelle Warner, donated her time and talent to paint kids’ faces. Eight teams took part in a Corn Hole Tournament and the winning team, comprised of Jordan Clever of Red Lion and Ken Loucks of York nudged out Miller Plant Farm employees Steve Slyder and Marco Moto to take 1st place. Winners received a Miller Plant Farm t-shirt. Several hundred people came out to enjoy the festivities through 2PM on what was a gorgeous, unseasonably cool August day.

Dave Miller, President & CEO of Miller Plant Farm, conducted the raffle drawings in the garden center farm market. He was assisted by son Dustyn and his wife Christy, along with his grandchildren, 6th generation farmers Cameron Fauth and Palmer and Alexandra Miller. The drawing was recorded and streamed live on Miller Plant Farm’s Facebook page, and winners were contacted personally. Many thanks to all of the generous donors in our community who provided such exciting raffle items.

Overall proceeds totaled more than $6,000 and will be donated directly to the Patient Help Fund at WellSpan’s York Cancer Care Center at Apple Hill.
